Everyone on this week's episode of Whispers from the Mist, Conversations from the Spiritual Byway. Today we are going to do something a little different. As October comes to a close, this is a chance to slow down to step away from some of the noise and to spend a little time with the themes of transition, release, and going in work. This episode is an October meditation for you. Before we begin, please make sure you're somewhere safe and comfortable to listen and make sure you're not driving or doing anything that requires your full attention. Thank you. It has a way of asking us to notice what is changing. The light begins to shift, the days become shorter, and then there is a noticeable chill in the air that wasn't there only a few days ago. You begin to notice that the trees that spent spring and summer reaching out. We understand the excitement of something coming in. The space between one children. And when we aren't sure of what's coming next, maybe it doesn't do that. Everything moves like seasons and the seasons. It's an invitation into that higher space. And perhaps to gently release, but no longer serves you. You don't have to know what is going to come next. You don't have to have all the answers for now. You only need to be here. Now, as you begin to settle in, find a position that feels comfortable. Let your hands rest easily. If it feels right, allow your eyes to close. And begin by simply noticing your breath. You're not changing it. You're not controlling it. You're just noticing it. Now take a slow breath in and gently breathe out. Again, breathing in and breathing out. Allow your shoulders to soften. Allow your jaw to relax. Notice the weight of your body being supported beneath you. You do not need to hold yourself upright now. You do not need to solve anything. You do not need to prepare for what comes next. For these next few moments there is only breath. This body, this moment, so take another breath in slowly. Now breathe out. With each exhale, allow the day to move a little further away. Let your hands soften, let your chest soften, and let your breathing become easy and natural. There is nowhere else that you need to be, and there's nothing else that needs your attention right now. You are here, you're grounded, you're present, you are supported. Now imagine yourself outside on a late October evening. The sun has recently slipped below the horizon. A little light remains in the sky. It's a deep blue giving way to gray, and that gray is fading into violet. The first stars are beginning to appear. A cool breeze moves past you. You pull your sweater or jacket a little closer around you. Take a moment to notice the feeling of the air against your face. It's crisp, it's clean, and it's cool enough to remind you that the season has changed. Take a slow breath in and imagine the smells of autumn surrounding you. Damp earth, dry leaves, a faint trace of wood smoke somewhere in the distance. Perhaps it's pine or apples or pumpkin. It's a field that has recently been harvested. Listen, you can hear leaves brushing across the ground, the breeze moving through the branches, and perhaps the distant call of an owl or the quiet creak of a tree, the sounds of a world settling into evening. At this time of year we become more aware of what we cannot see. The shadows seem deeper, the sounds they seem sharper, and the darkness feels a little closer. But you do not need to decide what any of it means. You do not need to fill the darkness with a story. You can simply notice it, simply listen to it, and simply breathe. Ahead of you is a path, a quiet path winding through the trees, and when you are ready you begin to walk. As you begin to walk, you move slowly. There is nowhere that you need to get quickly. You hear the leaves give softly beneath your feet, and some of those leaves they're still brilliant with color. Notice the gold, the amber, the rust, and the deep red. Other leaves, well, they have faded to brown and have already begun returning to the earth. Now look at the trees around you. Some still hold many of their leaves. Others they're almost bare, and yet none of them appear afraid of what is falling away. The tree it remains. Its roots they remain. Its strength also remains. Letting go has not made it less of a tree. Maybe there is something in that for you. The parts of life that fall away are not always the parts that define us. Sometimes they are simply what belong to another season. Notice how naturally the trees release what they no longer need. They do not chase after each leaf. They do not try to glue it back onto the branch. They let the season do what the season is here to do. Think about everything these trees have already done. They have grown, they have reached towards the light, they have provided shade, and they have withstood wind, rain, heat, and storms. And now their work it looks different. Now they are conserving. Now they are drawing inward. And now they are preparing to rest. Nature does not expect itself to bloom all year, and perhaps you do not need to either. As you continue along the path, become aware of something you may have been carrying. Don't search for it. Let whatever appears simply appear. Perhaps it's a worry or a responsibility, maybe an expectation, a disappointment or a fear about what comes next. Maybe it's a conversation that you keep replaying, an old version of yourself, an obligation that no longer fits, or maybe it's simply fatigue. Whatever comes to mind, do not judge it. There was probably a reason that you carried it. Perhaps it protected you. Perhaps it taught you something. Or perhaps it simply belonged to a season that is now ending. Ahead of you one fallen leaf catches your attention. You bend down to pick it up. You notice its color, its shape, the delicate lines running through it, and its lightness in your hand. Allow this leaf to represent the things you are ready to loosen your hold on. You don't have to force yourself to release it completely. Sometimes letting go begins simply by no longer gripping it so tightly. So hold the leaf gently and silently say I honor what this has taught me. I honor the part of my journey that this belonged to, and I give myself permission to release what I no longer need to carry. When you are ready, open your hand and let the breeze take that leaf. Watch it lift and turn and drift and watch as it settles somewhere among the others. Notice that you are still here, still whole, still yourself. It can leave without taking you with it. So take a slow breath in and breathe out. Continue walking and notice that the sky has grown darker, and above you the moon has risen. The moon's light filters through the branches. They look silver against the deep October sky. They inspire you, so look up and remember that the moon is always changing. There are nights when it appears full and bright. There are nights when only part of it can be seen. And there are nights when it merely disappears from view. But the moon itself, well, it remains whole. It has not vanished. It has simply moved into another face. Maybe there are places in your life that feel this way. Something that was once clear may now feel uncertain. Something that felt full may be changing shape. Something may be ending before you know what will replace it. You may be standing somewhere between what was and what will be. That can be uncomfortable. We all like answers. We like knowing what comes next. We like being able to see the path. But the moon, it reminds us that we do not need to live every moment in full light. You don't have to see everything to keep moving forward. You don't have to understand everything to trust yourself. You do not need to be fully illuminated to be whole. You are allowed to move through phases. You are allowed to change. You are allowed to become quiet, and you are allowed to go inward. And there may be things happening within you right now that cannot yet be seen from the outside. Maybe it's healing, preparing, or understanding maybe your becoming. For now, trust the phase that you are in. As you look forward, the path opens into a small clearing, and in the center is a simple wooden bench. You walk over to it and you sit. Above you is the night sky, and around you are the trees, the breeze, the scent of earth and leaves. And for a few moments there is nothing that you need to do. There's no answer to find, there's no message to receive, no decision to make, just stillness. Notice what it feels like to have nowhere else to be. Notice the difference between being empty and simply making space. Beside you, you notice a small basket. This basket represents what you have gathered through the seasons behind you. They're not possessions, they're something deeper. Lessons, strength, memories, wisdom, love, boundaries, truth. They are the things that you have learned about yourself. Think back over the months behind you. What have you gathered? What do you know now that you did not know before? Where have you grown? What have you created? Who have you loved? What has brought you joy? What has become clearer? And what is it that you have survived? Some lessons may have come through experiences you never would have chosen. But even difficult seasons can leave something behind, greater clarity, a stronger boundary, compassion, courage, discernment, or resilience. Now it's time to place whatever you want to keep into the basket. These are the things that travel with you. Because autumn is not only about release, it's about harvest. It's about recognizing what the season has given you before moving into the next one. Ask yourself quietly, what is it that I'm keeping? Begin to notice the quiet around you again. The cool air, the moon, the dark earth, the trees, the stillness. The world is not finished. It's resting. And the trees are not empty, but they are conserving. The earth it has not stopped creating. Much of its work is simply happening where we cannot see it. It's happening beneath the surface, within the roots, inside the seeds, deep in the soil. Maybe the same is true of you. Not every season of transformation is visible. Sometimes transformation is quiet. Sometimes it looks like saying no. Sometimes it looks like resting. Sometimes it looks like changing your mind. Sometimes it looks like setting a boundary. Sometimes it looks like choosing not to react. Sometimes it looks like leaving something behind. And sometimes it looks like simply allowing yourself to be still long enough to hear what is true. Now place one hand over your heart if that feels comfortable. Feel the steadiness that exists there. You have lived through other seasons. You have stood at other thresholds. You have walked into uncertainty before, and somehow you always found your way. You don't need to rush towards the next version of yourself. There is wisdom in the in between. There is wisdom in the quiet, and there is wisdom in not knowing the answer yet. As Halloween approaches, we are surrounded by stories of thresholds, doors between worlds, veils, shadows, things seen and things unseen. There are mysteries that we can't completely explain. For generations, people have gathered at this time of year to tell stories, to remember those who came before them, and wonder about what exists just beyond what we understand. But tonight, consider another threshold, the one within yourself, the place between who you have been and who you are becoming. Maybe you are standing there now. You don't need to fear the space, and you don't need to rush through it. You can stand there rounded, aware and curious. You can decide what you carry forward and what you are ready to leave behind. Look again at the basket beside you. Everything inside that basket belongs to you, your wisdom, your experience, your strength, your love, your intuition, your discernment, and your ability to begin again. You're not crossing into a new chapter empty-handed. You are bringing the harvest with you. So pick up the basket and notice that it does not feel heavy. These are not burdens that you are carrying with you. These are provisions. So begin walking back along the path. The moonlight follows you between the branches. The chill in the air feels refreshing now. The leaves they begin to move beneath your feet, and the wind moves softly through the trees. And somewhere behind you, another leaf lets go. Then another and another. There is no struggle in it, only the continuation of a cycle. Release, rest, renewal, growth, and eventually release again. Begin bringing your awareness back to your physical body. Notice the surface beneath you. Notice your hands, your feet, your breath, and take a fuller breath in. And slowly breathe out. Five, four, three, two, one. Perhaps there is something you are leaving on the autumn path tonight. Perhaps there is something you discovered you want to carry forward. Or perhaps all you needed was a little time in the quiet. Whatever came forward is enough. Now, before you open your eyes, remember not every season asks that you bloom. Some seasons asks that you gather, some ask that you release, and some they ask you to rest, and others they ask you to trust what is changing before you can see what's coming next. You are allowed to move with your own seasons. You are allowed to go inward, and when the time comes to step forward again, you will not be starting empty-handed. You will be carrying everything the season has taught you. Now, take one final slow breath in and breathe out. Five, four, three, two, one. Move your fingers, move your toes. Feel yourself returning to the room around you. And whenever you are ready, gently open your eyes. Welcome back. Happy October. Thank you for spending this time with me. I hope this meditation gave you a little space to slow down, to breathe, and to notice what the season may be asking you to release. As October comes to a close, remember that change does not always have to be rushed or understood immediately. Sometimes it is enough to simply notice what is shifting and trust yourself as you move through it. Thank you as always for listening to whispering from the middle.
