And if you like what you're hearing here, please download our episodes, Benjamin and enjoy them. Start the music. Hey everyone, welcome to this week's episode of Three Cups and a Dash of Spirituality. It is our Halloween episode. So we're super excited. We are going to be talking about Reddit stories, scary stories, and kind of breaking them down. So hey Chrissa and hey Stacy. Hello. Hello. Wait, that's not a ghost.
SPEAKER_00No, that was not a ghost at all, but I I was into it. Can you do it again?
SPEAKER_01It sounds more like an owl.
SPEAKER_03It is like an owl.
SPEAKER_01Anywho, I couldn't resist. I had to do it. But anyhow, in today's episode, as you heard in the introduction, we are going to be talking about Reddit stories. And the first one has to do with sleep paralysis or maybe not. And I think you're going to read this one, Stacy. So why don't you get it started?
SPEAKER_00You ready? And the title is Sleep Paralysis or Japanese Ghost. Hi, everyone. I've never posted to Reddit before, but I'm a longtime lurker when is and the and was inspired by Spooky Season to share my one and only experience of the possibly paranormal. I'm also super open to suggestions of different types of sleep paralysis that might explain this. This happened in Japan back in 2019, and I will be providing the age of everyone involved as it was at the time. In July of 19, I currently, 26 female, had turned 21. My sister, 23 female, had booked a month-long trip to Germany and Italy, then finally finishing the trip with 10 days in Japan. There was a heat wave that began in Europe and traveled and followed us east to Japan. So it was hot as balls the entire time. I want to know who determines what is hot as balls. Especially because this is a female writer, but you know, good on you knowing what how hot balls get. While we began our trip in Tokyo, we were able to convince my friend 24 male to book a last-minute ticket to Tokyo and to join us. He arrived the night and we all went sightseeing during the day and partying by night for the next two days. I went out the night before. We were supposed to leave for Kyoto and ended up only coming back to the hospital as my sister and friend were waking up to begin getting ready to leave. Long story short, I was still tipsy and realized someone had stolen my JR Pass. It was a bit of a stressful morning, and I was fighting a brutal hangover and having to sort out another JR Pass, which, if you've ever been to Japan, they're they're very expensive. What is it?
SPEAKER_01I would guess it has to be a transportation of some sort, maybe their rail system.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's that's that's my take on it as well. Because I know when I was in Japan, we had to buy like individual train tickets. So that's that's kind of what I'm assuming. We eventually arrive at our Airbnb in Kyoto around three. I wasn't really tired from being up all night, as I don't really feel greatly fatigued or affected from lack of sleep within reason, and my hangover was mostly gone. After we all checked out the house, I decided to head upstairs to my designated room for a nap before we headed out to dinner. The room had two single beds and a window. Sunset wasn't for another two or three hours, and the afternoon light was coming directly through the window, so it was quite bright in the room. I didn't mind as I can fall asleep in any condition. I was laying down on my left side facing the wall, my eyes closed for what felt like 30 minutes. My eyes snapped open when I felt the bed dip behind my shoulder like someone had put their hand down to steady themselves. Oh my gosh. That has that ever happened to you?
SPEAKER_01Have you ever felt like the blanket move?
SPEAKER_02It happened two nights ago for me.
SPEAKER_00This was followed by the pillow my head was on also dipping down, like someone had laid their head directly behind mine. All while this was happening, I was staring at the sunlit wall, too scared to breathe or move. I was fully able to move though, but was too scared to turn around because I definitely knew it wasn't my sister or friend, as I didn't hear either of them coming in the stairs, coming up the stairs. After what felt like an eternity, but looking back, it was probably only 10 seconds. I took a rallying breath and turned around quickly. I was met with nothing but empty, nothing but the empty, sun-drenched room. Nothing was on the bed, no indents on the pillow or bed. I quickly got my spooked ass up and bolted for the stairs, calling my sister and friends' names. They were downstairs playing the house's Nintendo 64 and were bewilderedly amused by my retelling of the event as they chalked it up to me, experiencing sleep paralysis. And I had never had sleep paralysis before, so I had nothing to personally relate it to. So as shooketh as I was, I assumed it was just that and laughed it off with them. Sorry if this was super long, pretty lackluster, blah, blah, blah. Also to note, I occasionally pull all-nighters. Yeah, that's pretty much the story. Oh, those are they're so scary. So, but but to me, that was not sleep paralysis at all. If she was able to move, like that's not that's not what sleep paralysis is.
SPEAKER_02Well, in sleep paralysis, so for me, you don't you can't move, but I can now know the difference of what's like true sleep paralysis where nothing's in the room and it's just your imagination versus there's actually is something there. I now because I've been doing it. This I've been doing it, it's been happening to me since I was 12.
SPEAKER_00I I've had I've had sleep paralysis experiences myself, and and I I know for a fact, like for me, sleep paralysis is you are conscious and cannot, like I was not able to physically move, which is why this one I was drawn to.
SPEAKER_01So you're conscious, you're aware of the room and everything going on around you. You're not in a sleep state at all, but you can't move. Right. And you're I've never had that experience before. Oh, don't wish for it. I'm not wishing for it. That's not a call to the universe to let me have it.
SPEAKER_00It's almost like you're pinned down. And so I would say, like, you know, one of the things that you had just said, Michelle, and Carissa, correct me if I'm wrong, but you are you are conscious, but you're still kind of getting out of the sleep mode. So you're kind of like in that weird in-between. And so with when we fall asleep, one of the things that our body releases is a hormone that that basically keeps us still in our sleep, right? So sleep paralysis tends to occur when we're coming out of that like hormone that is released that keeps us still. So we're not walking or rolling or doing stupid shit when we're sleeping. And it a lot of times it's associated with actually one of the things that we talked about earlier, like shadow men and demons coming through. Is they that that's when you experience it is you're you're paralyzed still essentially from your own hormones, and you have entities that are coming through that are that can pin you down. Does that make sense?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So are entities always a part of it? Like you're being held down by someone, or you just can't be.
SPEAKER_02Sometimes it's literally I wake up and I'm looking around the room and I can't move my body. Sometimes nothing is there, sometimes something is there from my imagination, from dreams, and then sometimes something else is there, legitimately there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And and in this particular Reddit story, it actually sounds like she experienced a an a physical entity, not that she was necessarily paralyzed, she just was paralyzed with fear and could not roll over, which is very different than a sleep paralysis episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Okay. Well, let me ask you this question. So I know astral traveling. I'm fascinated by it, but freaked out by it. And my first experience, I, you know, freaked myself out. I came right back. The second experience I had, I actually was able to astral travel until that moment that I realized how do I get back in my body? So I guess my question is how do you come out of sleep paralysis? Is that the scariest part? Because you don't know if you're going to. Like, I really don't know. This is freaking me out a little bit.
SPEAKER_02You've got to calm down and you've got to move your body to a different position.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you have to kind of just, you know, take that nice deep breath and start slow, you know, wiggle your fingers, kind of move from there. I also think that sometimes you have to step into the experience. It's like with with uh astral travel, one of the things that you get back to your body because your body's attached to your soul, right? So there's always that cord. You can't break that cord. So it's kind of the same thing. You're you're going to be able to move eventually. Sometimes you just kind of have to settle yourself back into it.
SPEAKER_01Well, I know that's how I get out of like a panic attack, but again, never having the sleep paralysis that I guess same idea. You you do you really have to will yourself and focus on I'm gonna move my fingers, I'm gonna move my toes, and then just let it build from there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I I think one of the experiences that I I have had with sleep paralysis is I was trying to talk and I was in that like that that really like I remember waking up trying to say what. I was so focused on just saying what. And when I finally actually was able to say it out loud, I was awake and I was good. I I tried to talk that one time and then I've been pinned down another. And when I was pinned down, I kind of had to just go, okay, take a deep breath. We're good, we're safe. My protections are up, and just remind myself that that I am safe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the first spirit that I crossed over was one I'd met the night before from sleep paralysis. He snuck in my dream, and he it's like he got in on in my body and I was fighting him, and it really was it really was painful. Honestly, it was painful. And that morning I got up and I did my meditation, sat with my guides, and I said, I know, I know, I want to know who this was. So go ahead and show me who this was. And they showed me he was not a nice guy, let's just say that. Not a nice guy at all. And I had to trick him to cross, and that was my first crossing over.
SPEAKER_00Michelle, you look so concerned.
SPEAKER_01I I am so concerned. I mean, I'm really happy that our body releases a hormone that keeps us still and in our bed. I did have a sleepwalking experience not long ago, and I have no idea how I ended up on the couch with my head hanging over like the side of the couch. Yeah, I have no idea how that happened. So it's important to have you know that that going. So I'm thinking about a lot of things. But what was your recent experience, Carissa?
SPEAKER_02Recent one, not last night, but the night before. I woke up to and it was loving and it was not scary, but it's scary because I can't move. But it was a big hug and then patting me on my on my head, and I was screaming, Mimmy, meet my grandmother. Mimmy, Mimmy, and it was her. Yeah, no, no, thank you. And I was looking at my dog, like trying to scream lavender, and I was and I was saying, Mimi, but I'm scared. I'm scared, I'm scared, because you're not fully conscious. Now, if she came right now and put her arms around me and padded me, I'd be like, Thank you, Mimi.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and I I think that's the part my like I'm hesitating and I'm going, no, no, thank you. And it's not like it's loving, and and I get that that you're saying it it very good positive energy. However, if if I am not conscious and you're touching me, we got problems. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, and while I've never had the sleep paralysis part of it, I have had like a hand like squeeze my leg, I've had my covers pulled over a little bit. I I have had all those experiences, and most of the time they don't freak me out too bad, but every once in a while it's like, what was that? Yeah, yeah, what's happening? Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The listener out there, listeners out there who have sleep problems, is I'm so sorry, because I know it's hard. It's scary. It is scary. It is. Yeah. Krista, do you want to take away the next story? Uh okay. This one is called After a Shift, after her work shift. Okay. I used to work in a bar at Cloves and her local area. So at 3 a.m., that's when they cleaned everything down and they don't get home until 4:30 or 5. The thing is, after every shift, I was always so hungry. So I'd make something to eat when I get in and then go straight to bed. The thing is, when I finished up in the kitchen, I didn't bother to turn the lights on. I knew my parents' house like the back of my hand. I knew where I was walking. I go straight through the back room, straight through the front room, in the hallway, up the stairs to bed. So when I turned that light off to walk through the back room with a mouthful of sandwich, there was a humming from a girl right next to my ear. Ooh. I've had that one time walking where the noise was right next to. They said something right into my ear. It was as if someone was standing right there singing into my ear. A young girl, and I felt the breath right on my cheek as she sung.
SPEAKER_01No, thank you.
SPEAKER_02As she sung the little melody. It made me go ice cold within a second. I've never heard the humming before or what it even was she was humming ever. But there's no possible remedy as to where this came from. All electricals were off, everyone was in bed, the dogs were asleep, and it wasn't windy. I didn't even have my phone on. It was in my pocket. I stopped walking when it happened, went absolutely ice cold, considered what just happened, and then carried on walking. I did not want to make a scene at this time in the morning. Not tonight, spirit. Not after that shift. I still tell people about this years later. It's been six to seven years. There's no possible reason that this happened, other than it being a spirit humming in my ear. I remember the feeling of it like an ice cold breath down my cheek as she sung. It lasted only about three seconds, but I know what it was. I still remember it like it was last night. And then three seconds still absolutely haunts me. I did not believe in any spirituality or stuff like that, but I bloody do now. Okay. Have y'all ever had let's start with this, someone's breath on your skin. I have not me neither. Oh, my grandfather did poke me with a feather, and he did uh sound off the grandfather clock he gave me, but I've never had a breath. Nope.
SPEAKER_00No, you neither you, Michelle. So so here's here's my question, and I just want a little bit of clarification on this. She was home, she was in her home, and this is the one and only experience she had in this space.
SPEAKER_02So it's that feels like she brought that little girl home with her from the bar. Yep. She didn't give little girl attention, so little girl left.
SPEAKER_00Right. That's exactly what it feels like to me, like a kind of a pass-through kind of deal, especially if it if nothing like that has happened before or since. What are your thoughts, Michelle?
SPEAKER_01I was just thinking I've felt things that close to me, not their breath on me or anything, but I've had my head sweat like it, where they almost feel like they took their hand and swatted through. I mean, that's usually when I know someone's there or my shoulder tenses up, but I don't think I'd like it if somebody was breathing on my neck or something that wasn't there. That would freak me out quite a bit. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I did a voice one time come in. This was one of the first experiences I had when I was 16. And he came in in my ear and said, Hey, and I was like, I didn't hear that. Beep, beep, beep, didn't hear it. Nope. And the shower is running. And I went to go get in the shower, you know, getting ready. And I looked up at the mirror that was foggy, and someone drew a smiley face, you know, with the two lines and a cert. And it's not something that could already be already being printed. It, you know, it had to, and I was like, I didn't see that either. And I turned my shower off, put my clothes on, went out of the house dirty. Yeah. And I wrapped it up in a little box and I put it away.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, I I remember like I've had my name called and you know, that kind of thing. Like I I've I've had, I I mean, I've had such a plethora of random experiences throughout my life. Like I do remember my name being called at my old house. And, you know, there was obviously nobody there. And even occasionally there have been times in in my current house where I've heard I've heard somebody go, hey. And I'll be like, you know, I'll I'll look at at my other half and be like, did you just call me? And he's like, no, why? And I'm like, oh, okay. Like, and I can just kind of move on. But that is not like for me, I know that's not, that's it's just not a way to get my attention.
SPEAKER_01And I've had several experiences like that. And the thing with those auditory experiences, especially when they're in the outer ear, you can so easily dismiss them as, oh, I didn't really hear that because it was just that one word. But that was my introduction to being spiritually awakened and it happened when I was 12. I heard my name and my grandma had just passed, and I know she called my name and I heard it outside my body, but I could dismiss it or go outside and pretend it didn't happen. But no, I I hear things all the time, but very often those signs and synchronicities come from podcasts and stuff. It's like they're speaking to me or they're giving me those breadcrumbs. That happens all the time. Right.
SPEAKER_02And coming off the paralysis before I forget and having after this story, I created the monthly meditation since the veil is thin this month and to connect with your loved ones. So after the sleep paralysis, literally that next morning, coincidentally, I created the meditation of connection with your loved ones. And my grandmother came through and she had a dog next to her. And this dog I remember seeing in pictures, but I never met this dog. And I called my mom and I said, Mom, did Mimi like this dog? And she's like, Yeah, why? That she goes, That dog was with us for like 19, 18, 19 years. Like that, and that it was just a long time. And she and I said, Well, it's weird. She that that dog was by her side. Isn't that weirdo being all the other dogs? And I said, and she's like, Yeah, that dog was an outside dog. And back in the day, those days, you know, people would sit on the front lawns and their lawn chairs, wait for the kids to come home. It was very community, big community feel. And she said, Every time she'd go sit outside in a lawn chair, that dog would sit next to her. And I said, Oh, well, then that's it. That's why. And my mom loved that dog as a kid. She loved that dog. So it was also my grandmother telling my mom, saying, Look who's with me, look who wants to say hi. Aww.
SPEAKER_01And before we go further, I'm just gonna throw a little side note in here because you brought up the meditations. Yes, three cups and dash of spirituality is growing, growing up. And we have decided to add at least one episode a month that will be a meditation. Carissa is tackling that because, of course, she has a sexy, beautiful voice to listen to. She's got a lot of experience with it. So thank you, Carissa, for bringing that to the listeners and to us too. It's such a gift.
SPEAKER_02Yes, thank you. They're not meant to turn you on, they're meant to relax. Relax, keep in your intuition and connection with the other side of the veil.
SPEAKER_00We have one more Reddit story, though, and I want to hear Michelle's.
SPEAKER_01So the story that I am reading today is called Camping Incident Last Year. And I'm just gonna say sometimes being out in the forest or out in the open can be freaky, as I would say the F-word, but I'm gonna try and keep it clean. So me and my best friend try to go camping once a year. We have been doing this since we were 13 years old. Never really been truly scared or had anything weird happen until last year in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We showed up during peak season the first night, and space was very limited. We were losing light, so we set up a camp on a spot on the side of the mountain. That was about, or I'm sorry, that was an absolute wind tunnel. Morning came, so we went into town to drink beers and we dicked around until late afternoon. Oh, good. They talk like we do, dicked around, things like that. Sorry, I digress because that's what I do. By the time we got back up to the mountains to switch our camping spot, we were losing light again, but managed to find a more remote spot. We get set up with our tents and get the fire going and start drinking again. And time goes by, and then probably 1 a.m. we see a flashlight aimed at us. No, thank you. Oh hell no, that just is all the serial killer movies. I know, I know. And then it starts walking our way. We don't really think much of it. And assume it's likely a park ranger coming to fuss at us about something because who else walks up on you in a remote part of the mountains at 1 a.m.? I can think of a couple serial killers that probably did. I don't know about you, but ever since I started camping, I learned it's kind of an unspoken rule that you don't walk up on someone camping that late at night unless it's an emergency. Anyways, the person gets close enough and we realize it's just some guy, probably in his early 50s in a shirt and basketball shorts, and his girl 40s, who is avoiding eye contact with us. So I think they're saying there was a girl there too. The man immediately forces a conversation about nothing, doesn't acknowledge the time, or his girl. His eyes were darting all over the place while we were talking to him about dumb shit, like what model or style of lantern we had and how cool it was. Small talk.
SPEAKER_02Wait a second. Were they asleep in the tent, or were they sitting out around like a fire drinking beer? Did they specify?
SPEAKER_00It sounds like the light woke them up and they got out of the tent. At least that's kind of what I'm reading between the lines.
SPEAKER_01But gosh, I ain't getting out of that tent. I'm not getting out. That's like in a freaky movie where you always run towards the bad thing happening. No, thank you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but then they have a knife and then they just start slashing the tent and you. So I guess you would want to get out.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's like, you know, the idea of bears being in the mountains, you're just a burrito for them.
SPEAKER_01Well, let's continue. He's saying weird stuff like how it used to be former law enforcement, completely out of context of the random conversation he engaged us in. And when all of a sudden he pretends to land his flashlight on our tents and says, Oh, that's where you guys are sleeping, huh? That's a cool setup. So now it's sounding like they weren't in the tent, that they were sitting outside the tent, flashlight at them. And now he's turned his attention towards the cool setup. The way his eyes and flashlight are moving gives us both the feeling that he's trying to see how many of us that there were and what we had on us or near us because his eyes and flashlights kept scratch scanning the ground around us. We were getting sized up, and for what? I don't know. Once this guy sees everything around us, he kind of pauses for a minute, ends the conversation, and walks off into the woods. Once his flashlight disappears, me and my friend look at each other. And without me saying anything, he looks at me and says, We're packing our shit and we're getting out of here. So we did. This was the most unsettling thing I have ever had happen while camping. I think this guy was going to wait until we were asleep and then come back. I just don't know for what, but I do know we were 100% getting sized up that night. Might not seem like much, but if you have ever had a moment with another human being who was sizing you up, you all know what I'm talking about. And I know what the story is about too. Intuition, gut filling, following it, guardian angels, and getting the get out of it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, that's it. Trust your gut, trust your gut, trust your gut, trust your gut. Who cares if you're wrong? You're alive.
SPEAKER_01You're a lie wrong or you can be dead wrong. I mean, that's the same. My husband always says to me, wrong or dead wrong. And I'd rather just be wrong and safe with doors around me and locks. Have either of you had an experience like that?
SPEAKER_00Wait, camping? No. No, not necessarily camping, but where you went somewhere and you like turned around and left. Oh, many times.
SPEAKER_02Many, many, many, but non-right now in the orfinal minute.
SPEAKER_01Also, I mean, not to that extent, but feeling we were being sized up and crossing the street to get away from someone who's making comments or looks like they may make comments. So on a much lesser scale. And again, when I'm put on the spot, I can't think of all my experiences, but I I've had things that have made me uncomfortable where I felt sized up and had to change my plan or direction.
SPEAKER_02Did you have one you're thinking about, Stacey?
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. When I was traveling a lot for work, I there if I had if I got to go up north, northern New Hampshire, there is one particular stop that I would make quite frequently. And it it's a natural, like occurring whatever, where it was about half a mile off of the parking lot where you parked in. So I remember one day it was warming up enough outside that I didn't have to wear, I was wearing a t-shirt, but there was still snow on the ground. It was still icy. And I was like, I'm gonna stop because that's just I I enjoyed stopping. And I got out of my car and I started walking to the natural, you know, beauty that I that I was going to stop and see. And I had to go under the highway because there's just this overpass. You go under the highway, and you're essentially like 500 feet from what you're you're looking for. And I got about halfway under the highway and I stopped. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. And I don't know what it was, but like I knew, like inwardly, outwardly, like my guides were screaming at me. If you keep walking forward, you're not going to make it. Like, that's not like keep walking forward, you're going to die. Keep going and you're going to die. And I have never had that visceral feeling of just fear for no reason because there was nobody else present. So I stopped and I kind of got my surroundings and I was like, okay, we're noping ourselves out of this. And I, and I left. And I didn't, I didn't go further. So that is that was the experience, Michelle, as you were reading that, that I was like, yeah, I've I've had that. And and that's the only time that I experienced something like that. I mean, there there have been other instances where I felt unsafe or felt like I would be hurt if I did certain things, but that one, I for some reason there was just this gut pull of you're gonna die if you move forward. You're gonna die if you keep going.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, with that book, The Gift of Fear is a great book. And we can always, always go back to that book and talk about our experiences that we remember because it's so important, especially for us ladies. Trust your gut. Trust your gut. Don't don't try to see if you were right, if it was right or wrong and keep going.
SPEAKER_00Nope. I'm with you. I have no idea what would have happened if I moved forward, but I knew it would have been bad. Like you could just feel it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it would have been bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. And as this episode is being released on Halloween, I'm gonna say everybody send positive thoughts my way. Yes. Happy wedding day. Happy wedding day. So my best friend is actually coming up to to stand with me. And so I have a little bouquet for her, and I got myself a bouquet that has a skull in it. What are you gonna wear? I'm wearing a black dress.
SPEAKER_01Love that. And I'm sure you'll let us post a picture on social media once the event has happened. And is Felix gonna be part of the ceremony? No, Felix is gonna stay home. Felix broke his back.
