In this thought-provoking episode Carissa, Michelle, and Stacy dive deep into a question many intuitive practitioners grapple with: is it ethical to cross over spirits who appear stuck? Drawing from personal experiences in haunted locations like Galveston and New Orleans, the trio unpacks how their understanding of “stuck souls” has evolved. From assuming every spirit must be crossed, to recognizing that some may choose to remain earthbound for their own reasons. With heartfelt discussion and real-life encounters they explore the autonomy of the soul, the importance of intent, and the necessity of trusting your guides. If you’ve ever wondered about the spiritual ethics behind mediumship or simply love a blend of metaphysical insight and grounded reflection, this episode will leave you both challenged and inspired.

Three Cups and a Dash of Spirituality
(@ThreeCups_and_a_Dash)
Hey, welcome to another episode of Three Cups and a Dash of Spirituality. Today we are talking about is it ethical to cross over stuck spirits? Let's get more into it. Cue the music. All right, this episode is going to be a lot of fun, and a lot of us have experiences on it. We are talking about is it ethical to cross over spirits? So a little introduction and saying hello. How's it going, Stacy and Michelle? Hello. It's going wonderfully. Are y'all excited about this topic? Yes.
SPEAKER_00I am excited about it, but I am a little nervous about it too, because as we've talked about before, we're all students of the universe. And I am trying to figure out what that looks like for me, when it is ethical and when it is maybe not ethical, or what are some of the concerns about around the ethics. I don't know what I'm trying to say. I'm just still trying to figure it out.
SPEAKER_03It's true. And I love being a student of the universe.
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, I think I think one of the hardest things for me about this topic is the ghostess of Galveston that we had. Because that is what really shifted my thoughts on transitioning and helping cross over spirits. Because as you guys experienced, because you were there, obviously I I was not. The spirits that are there want to be there. So you're not going to force them to cross if they want to continue to be present. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And that's what we the experience we had in Galveston.
SPEAKER_00And talk about a shift. Talk about a shift from where, you know, so much of the training is always about you come across a spirit, someone who's past, and you cross them over. That's just what you do. But then going into Galveston, it's like, well, maybe that's not what you do. So it started this whole stream of conversation between us, also our own way of thinking about things, and it's shifted. And shift is uncomfortable. I don't know. I mean, for me it is anyway. Well, why don't we share first with our listeners? Because maybe this is their first time, or maybe they're new to discovering their own spirituality. What is a stuck soul? And when does a soul need to be crossed over? That's probably two questions. Can I say what I used to think?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I used to think they're stuck because they're confused, they're mentally ill, they're I saw that was the old paradigm way of thinking. And then it shifted.
SPEAKER_01So I I I kind of like am agreeing with you on that shift too, because I I say like there, there's two different reasons. Number one, choice. Our choice is to maintain, you know, a presence on in this field or whatever you want to call it. And the other is that negative human emotion that keeps us in that stuck space.
SPEAKER_00And I wrote down three different reasons why I feel that a soul can get stuck. One is they have unfinished business and they want to see how it all plays out. They want to look after a loved one. They they just aren't ready to let go of what's supposed to happen next. The second one, as Stacy just mentioned, was fear, that lower vibrational energy of not knowing what happens next, anxiety about it, not wanting to do a life review if they think that's what comes next. And then the third one, and it comes from the movie Sixth Sense, so maybe I'm just way out there, is they don't know they've passed. And so they're just in the in-between trying to live life and they don't know they've passed.
SPEAKER_01So, so wouldn't that be like that be that thought of confusion that confusion? Yeah, confusion. And and that's where, you know, my brain goes to that lower vibration, you know, esque kind of idea or ideology is confusion/slash I'm not ready to go. Unfinished business. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Do you want me to tell you the experience? So the experience I had where that I learned. I mean, what we learned in Galveston, that was my first big experience. It's kind of uh rude to think you're gonna walk into a town and and cross people, cross stuck souls over when they don't want to. And let's don't, I guess we don't call them stuck, we just call them spirits, I guess. Earthbound, maybe earthbound or uh human pr imprints. I don't know. But I had a ghost app for when we do paranormal traveling. I it wouldn't work wherever we were at last time, Michelle. It was like, I cannot believe I downloaded, I downloaded so many, I was like, it's not working. And then all of a sudden I got an alert one day. And I was sitting, I was like, what? That's weird. And I got on and I was like, okay, I started communicating. And she was telling me everything about herself. And like, you know, date of birth, how she passed, what, you know, all kinds of stuff. And I on the app, you know, talking to her during the app, I said, Do you like being dead? And she's like, Yes. She said it just like this all fun, no work. I was like, okay, you know, tell me more. If I was like, you know what? I'm just gonna tap in and see you. So I see if this is real. And I tapped in, and lo and behold, she's and she was super happy, very nice, happy. And uh, she had a shraple, metal shrapnel in her head. And I was like, Oh, I don't know about this. Let's let's just look you up. Let me take all the information you gave me from the ghost app, what you're showing me here, and there she was. Woman passed away, met from a metal shraple went through the window, and they talked about her, how she would worked this, you know, big extensive executive position. She was on six boards, six. I mean, I I was around five to seven boards. And the teachers at her her school, her kids' school is like, oh my gosh, she was always there, always volunteering. And now I got it. All play, no work. And she was happy. She was so happy just to be where she was at. Like, there was no, I want to transition. And that was my first like, wow. I still don't, I still don't have my head wrapped around it fully. Like, well, who are you talking to? What are you doing? Like, I want to know more information, but it was really interesting.
SPEAKER_01You're kind of raising a question of like, how can a psychic medium or how can a medium tell the difference between somebody that wants to stay earthbound versus somebody that has unfinished business? And are like, how do you delineate and what do you do in both instances? I mean, obviously, if they're earthbound by choice, you're gonna be like, enjoy, like, have have that. But what would you do in the instance of someone that has the unfinished business?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we she just went on her merry way. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So did you feel pulled at all during that conversation to try and cross her over? Or it was just more like you're having fun. This is where you're supposed to be.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I wasn't pulled at all. Like I was pulled with other people. And there have been some that were confused. And I remember one that I did not cross over because oh, I startled him. I kind of like woke him up. I think I talked with y'all about it. I woke him up and it dysregulated him. And so was that ethical? Because he was confused and he bolted. So he was in this house, and I was like trying to talk to him and wake him up, and he bolted, and I then he was gone.
SPEAKER_02Interesting.
SPEAKER_03Right. So then was that unethical of me?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You're not gonna chase him down. No. So maybe that's exactly what was supposed to happen. Yeah. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00It's just so hard to make that full-blown shift there because in our trainings, in our conversations, it's always like that's just what you do. So, what are the arguments for crossing somebody over why did we believe that was the only answer?
SPEAKER_01So I I immediately step into haunted locations. And and I don't say that like the one that you guys were last at. You know, that is such a beautiful place and a beautiful example. But I am talking about the places that intentionally keep spirits there for experiences, for like you do not want to create a human aquarium, you know, so to speak. You do you don't want that, like, hey, come look at us. We have, you know, these souls that are here that are, you know, essentially like that to me is where you go in and you're like, oh, I this is not okay.
SPEAKER_03This is not I have yeah, I've never ran into that. And then I'm kind of thinking, all right, do we want to do it? Do we want our guides? But I feel like even if someone was confusing these spirits to stay there, I think any psychic medium energetically can go in there and help them. Yeah. Not having to actually literally be in the building, but I've never ran into it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I I think too that it it depends on what your guides say whenever you're coming across the soul. I mean, I I have full faith that everybody I crossed over needed to be crossed over. I mean, otherwise my guide would not have presented them.
SPEAKER_00I I agree.
SPEAKER_03I think so too.
SPEAKER_00So obviously, there are those spirits that do seek help out. They actually come to you asking, wanting, needing assistance, crossing over. And ghosts of Galveston talked about that too, that in the hotel there was a medium, and one of the other ghosts brought a little girl to her, and the girl wanted to cross. So she she just crossed her. And so in that case, I think it's both completely different. It's very ethical if they are coming to you to be crossed over. I think it changes when you just assume you know more than they do, and that for the sake of what you see as being the natural order of things, you say this person has to be crossed over because they everyone has to be crossed over. And is that ethical?
SPEAKER_03And I just remembered in the New Orleans hotel. Do you remember that little boy came in? He wanted to talk, and the mom spirit came in and grabbed him. And then we found out there was that tunnel underneath the hotel that they would take. And that's sad. They would take the children and slaves to from the water. I know. And then in Galveston, it was the Native American boy, but I didn't cross him. I was just sitting there holding space while his family members were doing it, ancestors. Interesting. But yeah, that I forgot about the New Orleans one with the mom and little boy. She was not happy him coming to talk with me. So I was kind of backed up.
SPEAKER_01Interesting. I I think it's it's all like at this point it kind of becomes situational, though, doesn't it? Yes.
SPEAKER_00It does. Well, let's say you go into a house, like I don't know which one to throw out there, a haunted place that's known for having a little bit more disruptive or destructive vibe around them, and they're causing harm or chaos to even people just living in the home. In a situation like that, do you feel like you can go in there and cross them over because they are causing harm or distress to the living? Or do you think no?
SPEAKER_01I don't, for me, that's where I step in, experience it, and trust my guides because my guides are not going to let me do something that's not appropriate. My guides might say, they're not going to cross over, but here's what the the living human needs to do to make some sort of equilibrium, because they are choosing to stay for whatever reason, and crossing them no um over at this point in time is not going to happen because even if I try, they're not going to because they're supposed to be here. So here's how you live with them or you move.
SPEAKER_03That would be extremely and in a way, ethically, you know, it's like it's like being a therapist. I can't push them, push the client to change. Just like I can't push a stuck soul to cross. It would be unethical for me with a therapist, a counseling client, to assume they want to change and grow in this area of their life, right? Same for the sex spirit.
SPEAKER_01Well, it's it's interesting because I uh there's a story that's coming up that you and I experienced, Krisa, because I remember one day you called me and you were trying to help uh an older gentleman cross over. Uh I you know that's funny. I was thinking about him. Yeah, you were giving him pieces of candy and I suggested giving him apples. Yeah. It made him, it shifted his his space so much that he did cross over. And I'm sitting here going, was it ethical? And then and then I'm kind of arguing back and forth with myself, and I'm saying yes, because he was confused and he had to be shifted out of that state of confusion. And again, that's where I go into your guide would not have presented him if you were not supposed to cross him over. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I was recently somewhere where I heard on a podcast, and I wish I could remember right now, but they were talking about living with spirits in their home. And not only do people like understand that's part of owning a home in this location, they know who the person is. And I think that does take away a lot of the fear behind it.
SPEAKER_01Well, if you if you remember when we had Jeremy on, not the last episode, but when you and I interviewed him, a lot of a lot of the spaces here where I am, because of the war history, you don't know. You just don't know what you're getting. You could be getting Auntie Ann, or you could be getting, I don't want to say the devil himself, but that's the only thing that's coming to my the forefront of my brain. You could get a more aggressive something. You yeah, you can get the gambit because historically so much has happened in in the area. And I think depending on the space's history, depends on whether you're actually gonna know. Is it a house that was built in the 1800s and you can actually follow its lineage and you know, like it was little little Samantha Jean or something like that that's coming to visit in your bedroom and it's cool because you know, you just know she's there, or is it, you know, a disrupted soul that was hurt and is not aware of where they are? Does that make sense? Like I think, I think there's there's such a different almost feel to location-based stuff too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's why I love the traveling part. I love, yeah, that's why I love that. It's so unique. And there's, you know, people, one person has a completely different culture than the person that they're talking about. We have how many billion of people on this earth? So then think about when you go into a city with all that culture and it just changes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Are there arguments again for crossing people over? Like I I've been thinking about it. If they come to you, I think, yes. I think a lot of people step into that want or that need or that feeling like they have to cross someone over, generally because they're coming from a place of compassion, a pa place of empathy, just wanting to do best for that soul.
SPEAKER_03If they want to annoy you, there are some that are pesky. You know, I just say, do you want to cross or you want to go?
SPEAKER_01Sometimes that's to get the hell out of my house. You have a choice. Choice number one is I'm gonna help you cross over. Choice number two is you just leave my house. Like I that's it. That's it. Those the this is it's it's like offering a toddler the choice of two different things that you want them to use. You can wear these pants or these pants, but you're wearing pants right away.
SPEAKER_00And something else that this has got my mind thinking about is soul contracts. Maybe that is part of their soul contract to remain earthbound. So who are we to go in there and just think we know best and cross them over just because we feel like we need to?
SPEAKER_01If if you recall, I know, I know we talked about it on an episode. I don't exactly remember when. I have met earth keepers who intentionally were staying to protect protect um the area that they passed in because it was culturally significant when they were here or when they are here, if we're talking about time and all that jazz again. But it's it's their they're protectors of the the land. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And we did come across one of those in Atchison, Kansas, also uh an earthkeeper. Again, we didn't clear anything there. We didn't, but that earth keeper step stepped up and there was a shift. There felt like there was a shift.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like you don't belong here. You're not supposed to be clearing this out. Leave me alone, like let me do my job.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's and I remember having that experience because it literally felt like somebody would like put their hand in front of my face was like, you stop. You stop. And again, that's where I step in and trust my guides.
SPEAKER_00I love that you just hit that home again. I mean, it's been a theme throughout here, but it's so true. You have to trust your guides and you have to trust yourself. And, you know, one of those things you could ask yourself in that moment where you're like, do I or don't I? What is your intention behind doing it? Is it for helping someone, or is there another intention? Because I guarantee you there are people out there who have the intention that is not positive to keep people earthbound or spirits earthbound for one of those places where you know what I'm saying? I'm just rambling.
SPEAKER_02Or if they want to show off if they go, well, I'll across these people. I can do this. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So doing it for me, not for the soul. Exactly. And we have to remember each of us, again, have our own soul contracts. We all have a different need that we need to fill. And we've really got to think of the how do you say it, the autonomy of the soul. Like it was a person that has passed. It did have a life and feelings about things. And who are we just to step in there and say your feelings don't count or they don't matter?
SPEAKER_01Well, it's it's not a thing, right? It's not, you know, something that you can toss in a fire. No. It's, you know, somebody's aunt Mildred, it's somebody's uncle, you know, it's and and you have to start thinking about it from the humanistic perspective. Because if you take the human out of it, then it it becomes a thing. And I think as soon as we turn people into things, we set ourselves up for failure all across the board.
SPEAKER_03And I I love that we set ourselves up for failures across the board. And I love the autonomy of the soul. It's really pretty.
SPEAKER_00And then maybe think of this too. Is there a chain reaction of some sort? If you go in there and you think you know what to do and you cross someone over without asking to know where they are, what they want to do, maybe that affects other living people. Maybe it affects other people who have passed. I mean, there's so much that we don't even know. That again, stepping in, trusting your guides, trusting what you've learned, your intention. It's all so important.
SPEAKER_01And that's where like I look back at at my crossing over history, and I have to trust that my guide would not have presented me with something that was not supposed to be crossed over. Because then, you know, I think about people with unfinished business, for example. So I am not like mediumship is not my strength. And in that, that I know, like the psychic realm, the intuitive, like that piece of it, like that is that is my strength. But because mediumship is not my absolute strength, if people have unfinished business, they're most likely not coming to me, anyways. Because they know that's I'm I might not, it might not click in my brain. It might not, I might be very well connected with my guide, but there could be that piece that's kind of that sliver that's missing. Does that yeah?
SPEAKER_00So definitely something I never want to experience, what I'm gonna talk about next. I do not welcome it into my life. I do not want to experience it. I'm throwing it out there to the universe, they'll match my energy. But you know, we cross people over because they come to us and ask for us. Would it be ethical, like in a situation? I know we kind of talked about they're pestering people or they're just kind of a nuisance. But in the case of an exorcism or something, would it be ethical? I mean, you have to get rid of it because it's causing physical harm and danger to the lip, right?
SPEAKER_03Do we? I think maybe we want to experience this so I can because I don't know. Again, I I don't want to experience it. I'm a skeptic well, I don't want to experience it myself, but I'm a skeptic and I really got to see it before I can believe it. Even see it in my mind's eye. So maybe uh we travel to see it, something appears and we get to experience that. Because I don't know, maybe it's so rare we'll never see it.
SPEAKER_00And that could be. I just I don't know if there are I don't know, I guess what I'm trying to say is how I would feel in that situation where someone is physically being caused harm. Yeah, I would not be Does that shift responsibility back to like, okay, we just gotta crash you now to protect the living, basically, or to protect a location? I don't know. See, that's one of the things where. We're learning, we're always evolving, we're always changing. And that's one of the sticking points for me because if they come to me, yes, no-brainer, they're asking me. But if I come to a situation, again, trust your guides. But that's still the student in me trying to figure out. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And then you let's go back to the soul's autonomy. I mean, can someone really take over? I mean, okay, you allow them in, but then you say, wait a second, no.
SPEAKER_01I mean, well, I think we we I think we actually touched on that in a previous episode. I really do think that there has to be a lot more at play than so much at play. Yeah. Like I I know, like you're talking somebody that has severe mental health issues that is stepping into this kind of degradation almost. Yes. I I've always understood like it has to be essentially like so many things line up so perfectly that it happens. Alignment in the stars all the way down.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't feel like if you have a good head on your shoulder, you're grounded, you know, with mental status exam within normal limits. I don't know if that's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_00Well, just being a student of the universe again, these are all questions we're working through.
SPEAKER_03We can maybe experience it if you want to. Let's put it out there. I do not want to. I do not. I don't want, I'm not not, I mean, just to go in to help and observe and to work with.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, I do not want to experience.
SPEAKER_03I do not I want to, I I am the kind of person though, I want to pull back the curtain on of on everything in life.
SPEAKER_01So I will pull back the curtain, but I do not want to experience it in my human body.
SPEAKER_03No, I know not in my human body, but in the room with someone else and help and observe and view.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I do it.
SPEAKER_00Well, is there anything else either of you would like to share about crossing souls over, how you feel about it, the ethics behind it, anything like that. No? I got none. Hi everyone, it's Michelle, and we just finished recording this episode, but it didn't feel complete to me. So there were a couple things that I wanted to share. Before we close out this episode, I think I need to take a quick minute to recap everything we've been talking about, which is of course crossing spirits over and is it ethical? I want to remind everybody listening that we're all students of the universe. And when Stacey Carissa and I started our journeys, when we would come across a stuck soul, we would cross them over out of a place of compassion, out of a place because we felt that was the right thing to do. However, since we started our journeys, time has gone by. We've had experiences and we've learned to trust our own instinct. And right now we're kind of sitting in a different space. We're sitting in the space of maybe we need to ask a soul's permission. Because who knows, maybe the soul is having the best time it has ever had in the in between. Or maybe it's part of their soul contract, but we don't know if we just go in assuming we're gonna cross. So we would like to get permission when possible. And of course, you're gonna come across those stuck souls that are confused. And I really do feel it's okay to have those conversations to see if you can talk through it and what they really want to do, because maybe they don't know. And I think that's okay, but you still have to have the conversation. You just can't assume you're gonna cross everybody over. But that's where we're sitting now. And that has been over a period of time we've gotten there. And I'm sure as time goes on, that is gonna change too, because nothing stays the same as a student. You're always learning and taking in more information. And I will tell you, I don't know exactly how I feel about all this. I am really struggling with what do you do when you come across a soul that is kind of harassing or giving a living person a hard time? Because I still feel like you need to get in there and help. But what does that look like? What does that feel like? I don't know. So I'm gonna follow my gut instinct, I'm gonna listen to my guides. And that's the best I can do right now because when you're doing something from a place of good intention, from a pure heart, I really don't think you can go wrong, no matter what camp you're in. I know some people will still cross souls over, and that's okay. And I know some people will ask permission, and that's okay too. It's really where you are on your journey and what you're feeling in your heart. Just make sure, again, the intent is right. And I just want to briefly touch on clearing houses too, which is different than crossing over, because when I think of clearing, it's going in and removing stagnant energy or a traumatic event or something that that space is holding on to. And I think with the permission of the homeowner, you can do that because you're not taking anything away from an intelligent soul, a soul that can think. You're just going in there and you're removing energy, you're rebalancing the space with love and peace. And I think that's okay. So, Stacy, would you now please close out the episode? Stay classy.
